Eatonville

Eatonville is a neighbourhood in the Etobicoke community of the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Part of a larger area known as Islington, Eatonville is bisected by Highway 427, with the community generally located north of Dundas Street West and south of Rathburn Road. Eatonville consists mainly of low density residential homes (constructed primarily in the 1950s east of Highway 427, and in the 1960s and 1970s west of Highway 427). The main arterial roads in the community, such as The West Mall, The East Mall and Burnhamthorpe Road, contain a mix of rental and condominium high-rise apartments and townhouses. There are two shopping malls in the neighbourhood, Cloverdale Mall and Honeydale Mall, as well as community retail areas along Bloor Street West and Dundas Street West.

Originally, Eatonville was a 400-acre farm owned by Peter Shaver at the end of the 19th century. The farm was one of two purchased by the Eaton's department store in the 1890s (the other was in Georgetown, Ontario) to provide a reliable supply of milk for the store's lunchroom and drug store lunch counter. Eaton's donated a parcel of the farm land to the local elementary school, which was named "Eatonville School" in honour of its benefactor. Eventually, the name of the school lead to the area becoming known by the Eatonville name.

The Eaton Farm supplied milk, poultry and vegetables to Eaton's until the 1950s, when it was sold and subdivided for residential development.

Today, Eatonville is the home of the Etobicoke Civic Centre, which once served as the city hall of the former City of Etobicoke. The community is also home to the Eatonville branch of the Toronto Public Library, which was reconstructed in 2003 to much acclaim. The former Shaver homestead has been preserved, and was relocated to The West Mall; it now serves as a local historic museum.

Islington

Islington is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was originally a village in the Township of Etobicoke, which later became the Borough of Etobicoke, and then the City of Etobicoke. Etobicoke merged with five other municipalities and a regional government in 1998 to form the new "City of Toronto".

The approximate modern boundaries of Islington are Rathburn Road in the north, Royal York Road in the east, Norseman Street in the south and Kipling Avenue in the west. The 2001 population estimate for Islington was 31,425.

Islington was originally known as Mimico. When Mimico-on-the-Lake petitioned the government for a new post office to be called Mimico in 1858, Mimico was renamed Islington, a name suggested by a resident who was born in the English city of the same name (see Islington).

The Toronto Transit Commission's Bloor-Danforth line was extended to Islington in 1968 with the establishment of Islington station at Islington Avenue and Bloor Street West. Not long after the station was constructed, there was a boom in high-density office and residential development.

Dundas Street west of Islington Avenue has been designated a Business Improvement Area known as the Historic Village of Islington.

Montgomery's Inn is also located in Islington, on the south-east corner of Islington Avenue and Dundas Street West. Dating to 1830, the inn is an example of late Georgian architecture. It currently houses the Etobicoke Community Museum and is open to the public.

The Queensway is the western extension of Queen Street (Toronto), after it merges with King Street near Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto, Canada. In contrast to Queen Street which explifies the urban nature of Toronto's downtown, the Queensway is more suburban in nature. The Queensway is a divided roadway with ramps and centre median dedicated to the streetcar service.

The section between Roncesvalles and the Humber River was rebuilt in the 1950s, as was the construction of the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard. This included the razing of the former Sunnyside Amusement Park, whose Ferris Wheel eventually was moved to Disney Land in Anaheim, near Los Angeles, California, USA.

As of summer 2005, after a period of prolonged deteriortion, it is being rebuit again. The eastbound lanes are currently finished, with westbound lanes projected to be finished by fall 2006.

The Queensway

The Queensway is an alternate route for those travelling the Gardiner Expressway west of Dufferin Street. The Toronto section of the road ends at the Etobicoke Creek, but continues as the Queensway (or Peel Regional Road 20) in Mississauga, ending west of Mavis Road, at Glengarry Road. There is a road allowance with hydro lines, cutting into the Mississauga Golf and Country Club on the shores of the Credit River. In the 1990s, the name Queensway was eliminated on the roads on this allowance west of the river.

Motorists may notice the unique variation in name on the overhead signs marking the exit to the Queensway from Highway 427 southbound that refer to Queensway Avenue. This is presumably to avoid confusion with adjacent exit signs for the Queen Elizabeth Way, which runs parallel to the Queensway.

During the 2000s, the Queensway has been subject to new Condominium development particularly in the vicinity of the Humber River. This section also provides residents street car service downtown.
